exhibition, graduation and winter pictures

posted on 04 July 10

The exhibition went well with many people passing through the gallery and the feedback I have had has been very positive. As usual everyone chose different pictures as their favourites which pleases me and justifies my choices. My wife suggested I include 'Dog and Heron' which is now in my landscape section and shows our young Labrador sitting by the Tyne with a heron, a regular visitor to this stretch of river, in the distance. I am really pleased that she did as someone displayed great taste and discernment by purchasing it. Having now removed my pictures I replaced them around my home (my walls have looked quite naked for a month). I have had little time for photography over the past few weeks as I have been travelling around the country with Shontal (www.shontal.co.uk) performing in schools. Our show is concerned with personal finance and sends out various messages to the students about debt. We were featured on radio 4 on their Money Box programme on the 3rd of July as one of their reporters came to see us at a school in Bedlington. One more week of the tour to go and then we can get back the usual more sporadic approach to life and work!

I am breaking my tour next week to drive to Aberdeen to attend my daughter's graduation. She has achieved a good first and is going on to a PHD in Celtic Studies so a quick drive from our show in Rotherham on the Wednesday and then back again for another in Settle on the Friday is required with a stop off in Aberdeen on the Thursday for a little celebration and a chance for me to take some pictures of my little girl. You may also see her on this site in the events section as one of the girls dancing with swords.

You may have noticed the addition of the winter section in the portfolio. I figured it was about time I shared some of the splendour that was the Northumbrian landscape during the beginning of the year. I have a few of these on my walls and I do find them cooling to look at during the hot muggy weather we are currently enjoying. I have also made several of them into cards and fully intend to start advertising greetings cards on this site as soon as I get a few minutes.

For the future I have a few projects coming along not the least a promenade performance of Hamlet set in and around an old bastle house. I am playing the dead king and quite looking forward to it as it must be about twenty years since I have performed Shakespeare. I'll keep you posted as things progress but I'd better sign off for now as I have lines to learn forsooth!

About Gary

I have been taking photographs for a number of years and have provided images for individuals and families as well as for business use. I have worked in promotional photography in the theatre and taken portraits and headshots for actors. As well as covering festivals and competitions I am happy to accompany dog owners on walks in Northumberland to get a picture of their pet in a natural setting and have been known to follow a cat around a garden to catch it in the right light.

In addition to taking photographs I spend some of my time acting. In the past I have managed bands and community arts projects and taught classes in IT, Arts Management and acting.  I have worked with men in prison covering subjects such as relationship management and drug awareness. I learned a great deal from all of these experiences and discovered that teaching is as much about listening as it is passing on information. The photography courses I run are for beginners who want to get started with digital cameras and programs and if you would like to have a chat then please give me a ring.

I hope you like the pictures I have featured on the site. Please feel free to drop me a line through the get in touch link above it's always nice to hear from people.
